B-52 Makes Emergency Landing at Minot Airport
A B-52 is sitting on the tarmack at the Minot Airport after making an emergency landing there early this morning. The B52 was on a training mission out of Barksdale Air Force Base. It was about to land in Barksdale when a navigation component that allows them to land in bad weather broke and the plane couldn't land. The only other base that can handle a B-52 is the Minot Air Force Base. The plane had enough gas, so they flew to Minot.
But, as soon as the crew got to the Minot base, the weather got foggy and they couldn't land there, either. Fortunately, the weather was clear at the Minot airport, so that's where the plane finally landed at around midnight this morning. And while Air Force officials say landing went smoothly, it still posed some challenges. \"Minot and Barksdale bases are designed to accommodate B-52 the runway is long and wide we have maintenance support and security resident on base,\" says Col. greg Bell, of the 5th Bomb Wing. \"Here the runway is shorter and narrower and so that presented some challenges for this very professional crew who handled it well.\"
The Air Force has been working on moving the plan to the base all day. They say the plane will fly back to Barksdale sometime this weekend. The B-52 has not interfered with any flights arriving or leaving the Minot Airport.
